Marika Anne Whitaker
Boston-based artist Marika Whitaker works in, between, and through multiple art modalities. After receiving her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018, her practice in painting, sculpture, installation, text, performance and sound continues to develop. Interwoven with her visual art practice, Whitaker is a teacher, touch based healer, ritual creator, partner and mother, all of which inform her visual work. Most recently, Whitaker has used her practice to articulate intimate relationships as a site upon which power dynamics play out. Her installations unveil these power dynamics and creates a topography of each relationship.

I Looked Away When I Answered
Whitaker uses map pins to locate and articulate power dynamics in I Looked Away When I Answered. Whitaker uses dotted lines as a recurring motif which motivate a commitment staying in touch with what we don’t know, the practice of building connections, and symbolizes gaps in knowledge. Strings are a binding agent, holding tension and weight, and serving as a means of communication between points.
